Struggling With A Naysayer

Don’t you just love it when you share your tender dream with someone and they immediately catch your enthusiasm for it? They might even pat you on the back and encourage you to go for it, guns ablaze. These are the best kind of people! They are for keeps.

But there is also a breed of people who will throw a wet blanket on your dreams without a second thought.

These people stand ready with ‘helpful advice’ about why you are destined to fail if you pursue your dream: it’s hard to get published; you can’t make money doing that; you are not qualified enough; you are going through a phase.

Sounds like a naysayer! And if you listen to a naysayer long enough, you will start to believe that maybe you are crazy for wanting a life that’s less than ordinary.

So how do you stop a naysayer from extinguishing your life-dreams?

Here is what works for me:

1. Shield your dreams

Your dreams and aspirations are sacred; be mindful who you share them with. In her book “The Secret Door To Success,” Prosperity Teacher, Florence Scovel Shinn, writes that talking too much about your affairs scatters your forces and brings you up against a high wall. I take this to mean talking about our dreams opens the door to other people’s doubts and scepticism.

Think about it - once you get someone else's opinions in the mix of your creation, not only do you have your own expectations and beliefs to manage, you now have the added task of managing their stuff as well.

So it's worth being very deliberate about who you bring into the mix of your creation.

2. Tune them out

Everyone gets to choose whatever they want to believe, and just because a naysayer says or believes something doesn't mean you have to believe it too. Don’t get defensive, don’t argue your point, don’t try to sway them to your side. Just switch them off and build confidence in your plans. Live and let live!

My favorite 'watch me, I'm gonna to do it anyway' affirmation comes in the form of Eminem's Not Afraid song.

3. Hang out with a cheer squad

Align yourself with people who are supportive and see potential in you. By the same token, seek to inspire possibility and empowerment in others, and break out into a victory dance for their every win.

Use these affirmations to attract ideal people and relationships:

  • My friends and I encourage each other’s growth and success.
  • I only attract people who love and support me.

4. Have faith in your goals

Before anyone else in the world believes in your dream, you have to believe in it. Believe that something good can happen, and then focus your heart, creativity and energy into bringing it to life. Do this above all else and you are going to hit a home run.

To amp up your belief that your treasure is within reach, ask yourself these questions:

  • What is my heart's true desire? - This is your chance to get clear on what YOU want, not what you think is possible or what others want for you. What do you really want?
  • Why do I want it? - We want the things we want because we believe having them is going to make us feel good. Whether that good feeling is success, joy, satisfaction, relief, etc., start engaging it now and your dream will not seem so foreign and unachievable.
  • Why do I believe I can have it? - Maybe you know someone who has achieved a similar goal, look at your past successes and accomplishments, your skills, etc. 

5. Be your #1 fan

We are such sublime creatures you and I, and we deserve the very best that life has to offer - unlimited abundance in whatever shape or form we desire. Trust in yourself and in your worthiness, then nothing anyone says will sway you off your path to success. The best way to cultivate this sense of worth and self-belief is by practicing LOTS of self-love and self-acceptance.

Seriously, the system is set up for your success; choose to believe you can succeed and hold onto that thought no matter what the outer circumstances and opinions of others.

You get to write how your story ends, not the naysayers.

Hey, The Beatles were told they had “no future in show business,” whilst only five people turned up to see the Wright brothers’ first flight in their “heavier-than-air machine.”

LOA Friendly Lists

Let's talk about your to-do list.

You know that little paper that keeps you ehh... focused, productive and rules your life? What’s that I hear? It’s got you feeling dissatisfied and frustrated?

Yep, that can happen with to-do lists. And goal lists too.

That’s because as well intentioned as they are, these lists tend to spotlight what's missing in our lives and just how much is yet to be done and gained.

And therein lies the power of the list: it hones your attention on something - whether good or bad. Which is why it’s worth getting very deliberate about leveraging the power of lists so that you can shift or enhance your focus, consequently refining your point of attraction.

How?

By keeping lists that attune us to abundance and align us with the feeling of our wish fulfilled.

I’ll share a few lists that I think a deliberate creator is well served to play with. These lists evoke the energy of accomplishment and satisfaction, and they'll help draw into your life more of the things you want to have and experience.

1. Gratitude List

Two words that will change your life... "thank you." So start your list now and thank, thank, and thank. Appreciation is truly the highest form of prayer. It's up there with love and passion. It is the fastest way to connect with Source and well-being. It is magnetic and will draw your desires to you. Keep reminding yourself of the good in your life.

2. I Have Statements

These are not the same as gratitude statements. These are more so to bring up a feeling of Financial Security within myself. I have found these to be a very effective tool for shifting my attention away from what's lacking or not quite right in my life, to instead what is present and working; which of course invites more in. I have gas; I have water; I have a roof over my head; I have a nice, warm, soft bed to sleep on at night. Even as I list these basic things, a warm and very firm sense of security wells up within me.

3. Success List

Instead of focusing on how far removed you are from your end goals, why not pay more attention to the progress you've made so far; document and celebrate your progress, your wins, and your victories and achievements.

Success lists are great for perspective, and seeing how much you have already accomplished will motivate you to move forward with confidence and positive expectation. As the wise say, success breeds success.

4. Best Qualities List

Acknowledging your strengths and qualities is the best kind of self-awareness. Whether it’s your smarts, smile, kindness, quirks, or something about your body, go ahead and toot your own horn. We are not going for cocky here, we are going for confidence. Be proud of yourself.

And when you are having one of those days that just isn’t your day, or you are feeling discouraged and unappreciated, look over your Best Qualities List and shine a spotlight on your greatness and how valuable and love-able you are.

5. Prosperity List

Document, appreciate and celebrate all the forms of financial abundance in your life. For example your salary, change in the street, discounts, gifts, frees lunches, free coffee, interest earned on your savings, the $2 prize you won in the lottery - anything that puts your focus on ‘money coming in frequently and easily.’ This is a wonderful list if you want to improve your relationship with money.

6. Positive Aspects List

List the things that you love and appreciate about the people in your life, from your loved ones all the way to that guy that makes your blood boil. This is so much better than walking around tallying grudges and slights. There is good to be found everywhere - but only if we are willing to look for it.

7. Love List

What do you love to do and what makes you happy? Write it down and do more of it. From moonlit strolls to sleeping outdoors on a summer night. Or listening to your mom’s laugh, late-night chats with your best friend, café hopping for desserts, perhaps chasing a dog in the park. Those little joys add up to a life of bliss.

Now, that’s more like it! These lists promote a state of appreciation, ease, playfulness and abundance. And in case you are wondering, no, it’s not irresponsible to prioritize joy and well-being. In fact, use these 'feel good' lists in conjunction with your to-do list and watch as your results skyrocket because things get done more swiftly when you are in a state of joy.
